Chris Crocker, originator of the famous “Leave Britney Alone” video is a perfect example of the power of Web 2.0. Just from that video, Crocker has been featured on talk shows, news broadcasts and other media outlets. There have even been talks of creating a reality television show based on his antics. Imagine how many more income opportunities Crocker would have if he sold “Leave Britney Alone” paraphernalia through an ecommerce site.
And that’s the magic behind Web 2.0. Even if you don’t get to Crocker’s status, you can still use these types of sites to establish a following of customers. And this can be done in two ways: establishing a community of friends or creating content that goes viral. Both of these methods are described in greater detail below.
1. Establishing a Community of Friends
Social networking sites such as Facebook, Delicious and Myspace are the types of networks you use if you’re trying to build up a community of friends. If you’re not good at writing, you can build up your network of friends by viewing other people’s content and profiles. If they seem like the type of person you would like to befriend, you can join their community. Do this about 100 or so times. However, don’t immediately advertise your website. Make sure you participate in discussions for awhile. Then, once trust has been established you can advertise your site, (assuming you have that person’s permission).
You can also use your own social networking site to get friends. The best way to do this is to create compelling profiles, content and videos. You want to make sure your content hits the right buttons, because if it does, people will feel that you can offer them something a little more special than another member.
2. Viral Content
Chris Crocker had a network of friends, but what really earned him his fame was the fact that he created content that went viral. You can do the same by studying the types of content that are already popular.
Video content is the most viral. They are more entertaining than articles, and can be more memorable. The ones that do the best tend to be humorous in nature. However, emotional videos can also have an impact, especially if they showcase triumph in the face of difficulty or how someone has been wronged in some way.
If you decide to use video content, you are usually allowed to advertise your site at the end of the video. However, try to avoid making a blatant advertisement. While many networks will allow you to do this, it is less appealing to visitors. Instead, offer a video that offers something of value, whether it is information or entertainment. Visitors will notice your site when they finish watching the video.
Speaking of which, make sure the domain name you choose to promote is short and memorable. This is because visitors cannot copy and paste the URL, since it will be a part of the video content. So, if the domain name is short and memorable, they will just type it into their browser.
