The process behind how to set and achieve a goal has 3 essential elements. These are Vision, Roles and Goals. The mechanics of goal setting itself is the very last step in the process. This article describes these elements and how you can begin to apply them.
1 - Vision
“It’s time to start living the life you imagined.”
Henry James, American Author.
That Henry James quote is a real clue to the magic of living a creative and enjoyable life. First comes the use of your imagination. Or, as I like to call it, of your “directed imagination”.
Like a searchlight, you point your beam in the direction of your intention.
That becomes your desired vision of how things might be in your chosen life category - e.g. careers or relationship or wealth.
And then you start living it as best you can, with what you have, right where you are.
Some people are good at the imagination part and then fail to take action and begin to live it! Don’t let that be your fate too!
2 - Roles
In whatever state your life currently is, you are playing roles that contribute to it. These roles can suit you well - perhaps you are an excellent parent. Other roles may be not be working out - for example, you might be a poor custodian of your own finances.
What you must first do is to identify all those roles you are currently playing. Get a trusted friend or mentor to help you do this. Write them down.
Then make a commitment to take 100% responsibility for turning round the roles you need to create momentum toward that life you imagined. You have a good chance of doing it but you must make that conscious decision to change.
As for the other roles which are not serving the journey into your imagined life.
Well, just as it probably took some time to acquire these roles, learn how to play them and then get the corresponding habits and results that go with them; it will take time to jettison some of them and undo their effects.
Be patient with that and remember to also be compassionate with yourself and with others. Changing the status quo is not guaranteed to be easy and you would be wise to prepare for some resistance from those close to you. As a well designed boat can ride out stormy seas, so can you navigate the emotional currents of your own life.
3 - Goals
Setting goals falls nicely into place once you have got progress toward your visionary life underway, and begun having some fun living the roles that go with it.
And by the way, if these roles aren’t much fun then there isn’t a lot of point in playing them! Think them through carefully - it’s probably who so many give up on the life they thought they wanted. They’re simply not prepared to pay the cost of becoming the person they need to be to get there!
As for the mechanics of how to seat and achieve a goal. You can choose to set OG goals, PB Goals, DUMB goals and SMART goals. Pretty much in that order.
